Lecturer in Writing (Multiple Positions)

Baruch College - Lecturer in Writing (Multiple Positions)

Job Description:

The English Department at Baruch College, one of eleven senior colleges of the City University of New York, invites applications for a full-time lecturer position in Writing to begin August 25, 2022. The College is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to our mission of educating one of the most diverse student bodies in the U.S. Successful candidates will collaborate with an engaged full-time and adjunct writing faculty to design and teach courses in first-year writing.

Lecturer faculty are considered “master teachers” who occupy faculty lines focused entirely on teaching and service, with no research requirements. Lecturers teach 24 hours per year: three courses per term in the first-year writing sequence (ENG 2100 and 2150, four-hour courses, with a maximum of 75 students per term). Lecturers make a substantial contribution to the Writing Program and College through committee service, participation in assessment, curriculum design, and faculty and student mentoring, among other avenues based on expertise and interest. Lecturer faculty participate as full faculty members of the English Department, the College, and the University. In their fifth year, Lecturers will be eligible for promotion to a Certificate of Continuous Employment (tenure-like status) based on teaching excellence and dedicated service.

Candidates for Lecturers in the Writing Program will be expected to:

  • Demonstrate teaching excellence, including creative course and assignment design in research-based, academic writing at the post-secondary level
  • Teach primarily in lower division required courses
  • Participate in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) and writing studies and pedagogy conferences (Lecturer faculty are eligible for professional development and travel funds)
  • Participate in Baruch’s Inclusive Pedagogy Workshop and CUNY’s Innovative Teaching Academy
  • Demonstrate effective teaching in a variety of teaching modalities, including the use of educational technology to support teaching and learning

Compensation and Benefits:

CUNY offers faculty a competitive compensation and benefits package covering health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and savings programs.  We also provide mentoring and support for research, scholarship, and publication as part of our commitment to ongoing faculty professional development.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in area(s) of expertise, and the ability to teach successfully.

Candidates who hold an MFA or an MA in Rhetoric and Composition, English, English Education, or equivalent field will be given preference (an MFA or MA in these fields is highly preferred). Candidates with additional graduate coursework or who are ABD will be considered; however, potential candidates should note that these positions do not require a scholarly / research / publishing agenda.

At least three years of demonstrated, successful experience teaching first-year composition at the college level is preferred.

With this search, we are particularly looking for candidates who have the following specialized experience and demonstrated knowledge:

  • Commitment to Diversity: Teaching a diverse student body, Baruch faculty should have a strong understanding of and experience with the literacy practices of multilingual students, incorporating diverse rhetorics and literatures in their courses as well as pedagogical practices informed by translingual and multilingual composition theories.
  • Digital Literacy and Rhetoric : Since our second semester writing courses include a multimodal composing requirement, and given the importance of digital rhetoric knowledge in our students’ lives, lecturer faculty in the Writing Program should show evidence of creative use of digital platforms and multimodal composing in their courses.
