Visiting Assistant Professor of German Studies

The German Studies department at Lawrence University of Wisconsin, a liberal arts college and conservatory of music in Appleton, Wisconsin, invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor for academic year 2022-2023 (https://www.lawrence.edu/academics/college/german). The German Studies department offers major/minor tracks along within a robust German cultural studies program. From the beginning language sequence to the senior capstone course, our highly motivated and intellectually curious students encounter a curriculum that develops not only their linguistic proficiency, but also the skills of interdisciplinary critical analysis using culturally relevant materials. All of our courses draw from diverse intellectual traditions and theoretical approaches allowing students to situate their learning within a multicultural and global liberal arts context. 

 

Applicants to the position should demonstrate a critical, interdisciplinary approach and be able to work effectively across the German Studies curriculum. Areas of expertise are open, but candidates are expected to have experience in language pedagogy and demonstrate a commitment to inclusive teaching practices. Current teaching needs include the first and second-year language sequence and two upper-level German cultural studies courses in an area of the candidate’s specialty. Particular preference will be given to applicants who express interest in teaching our Comparative Fairy Tales in Translation (GER 276) course. The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with undergraduates in a liberal arts setting and to contribute to our First Year Studies program (https://www.lawrence.edu/academics/academic-experience/first-year-studies), which introduces an interdisciplinary orientation to the liberal arts and is designed to cultivate new students’ skills as readers, writers, and thinkers. 

 

Duties include teaching 6 courses on a 10-week term system (2 classes each term). Ph.D. in German Studies or a related field by the time of appointment preferred, however, ABD candidates will receive full consideration. Native or near-native proficiency in the German language required.
