Introduction (Description of School/College/Dept/Program)
The Linguistics Department at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee has research and teaching specializations in phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, historical linguistics, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). We offer an undergraduate major, Master’s degree programs in Linguistics and in TESOL, and a doctoral degree program in Linguistics, as well as certificate programs for TESOL. We have several dedicated laboratories, with equipment for high-quality sound recordings, psycholinguistics experiments, ultrasound imaging and eye-tracking.
Job Summary
Pending final budgetary and administrative approval, the Department of Linguistics at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee seeks to hire an Assistant Visiting Professor in Linguistics for the 2022-2023 academic year. Duties include teaching four courses, two per semester, in the subject areas of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, bilingualism, and language and society. Additional duties include serving on departmental committees, coordinating relationships with local community agencies who teach adult learners of English, advising TESOL students in the MA and certificate programs, and advising doctoral students in areas of expertise.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, TESOL, or related field, with specialization in an area related to second language acquisition or TESOL, is required by the start date.
- Evidence of ability to teach university courses related to TESOL, bilingualism, and language and society
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience teaching English to adult learners
- Research specialization in TESOL practices and methodology
- Demonstrated record of scholarly achievement, including publications in peer-reviewed journals
- Evidence of ability to teach university courses in general linguistics
