The U.S. Naval War College is a Professional Military Education (PME) institution serving the nation, the Department of Defense, and the U.S. Navy. U.S. and selected international graduates earn Master of Arts degrees in National Security & Strategic Studies or Defense & Strategic Studies accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education. Position. This full-time temporary (2-year, non-renewable) position is located in the NWC Writing and Teaching Excellence Center (WTEC) and reports to the Director of the WTEC and the Dean of Academics. The Fellowship begins in August 2022. The Fellow will be expected to divide their time equally between teaching in the WTEC (with the possibility of teaching an elective course in their area of expertise in the second year of the fellowship) and pursuing their own research and professional development. The purpose of the fellowship is to draw on the talent and expertise of junior scholars from across the disciplines who are committed to teaching writing or who adopt writing-intensive pedagogies in their classrooms. In return, the NWC hopes to provide these early career scholars with a unique teaching and research opportunity in a dynamic writing center that serves a selective, highly motivated group of graduate students made up of U.S and international military officers and U.S. civilians from a wide variety of government agencies.
Writing and Teaching Excellence Center. According to its 1884 mission statement, “The War College is a place of original research on all questions relating to war and to statesmanship connected with war, or the prevention of war.” To achieve this mission today, and among other things, NWC students take graduate courses in strategy and policy, joint maritime and military operations, and theater and national security decision-making, as well as graduate elective courses covering a broad range of related topics. Through individual and group conferences organized around rigorous, structured, student-centered conversations, the NWC Writing Center, a part of the WTEC, supports students in all aspects of their academic and professional writing development, helping students to excel academically during their time at the College and preparing students to serve at higher levels of command and staff afterwards. The Writing Center also provides support to NWC faculty seeking guidance related to the teaching of writing and/or integrating writing-intensive practices in their classrooms. Our experienced faculty have years of earned expertise in writing center work and across a variety of academic disciplines, including rhetoric and composition, creative writing, literary studies, history, and international relations.
Responsibilities. Primary responsibilities include conducting individual and group writing consultations, leading writing workshops, and maintaining currency and activity in the Fellow’s areas of scholarly or professional expertise. Additional duties include supporting Writing Center administration and assisting the Director of the WTEC as needed and providing writing-related pedagogical and curriculum development support to College departments and faculty. The Fellow will also be expected to participate in the intellectual life of the College, and to become acquainted during their time at the NWC with the needs of U.S. Navy leadership with respect to the strategic and operational, political and military, national and international security challenges under study at the NWC insofar as these inform the student experience and student writing across the NWC curriculum.
Qualifications. Qualified candidates must have a PhD in hand and awarded within the last five years at the time of appointment. A PhD in Composition and Rhetoric, English, Literary or Language Studies, ESL, or related field, OR a PhD in another relevant academic discipline (esp., History; Political Science; International, Area/Regional, or Security Studies, etc.) is required. In all cases, successful candidates will demonstrate an established history of work experience in (or in association with) a university writing center or writing program and/or an active commitment to writing-intensive, writing-based instruction.
Qualified candidates must be U.S. citizens and capable of obtaining a SECRET security clearance.
Salary Considerations. Salary is $68,070 from the Navy Faculty Pay Schedule and a research travel stipend ($5,000). This compensation package is accompanied by a generous federal employee benefits package that includes health insurance with employer contribution, retirement savings plan, paid vacation and sick leave, and other benefits.

NOTICE OF VETERANS PREFERENCE: There is no formal rating system for applying veterans’ preference to the excepted service; however, the Department of Defense considers veterans’ preference eligibility a positive factor for hiring.
