Position Overview

The Department of English at The University of the South invites applications for a visiting assistant professor in American literature. We are interested in candidates teaching any period of American literature, but especially fiction, drama, or environmental literature. This position will start in August 2022. Position Description

Teaching load is six courses per year, a combination of upper-level courses and our English 101, a literature and composition course (you can find course descriptions here). The College provides strong support for research and faculty development, and encourages multidisciplinary approaches to teaching.   

 

Attributes of a Successful Candidate

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in English or a related field in hand at the time of appointment, and experience in and a commitment to undergraduate teaching. 

In addition to a letter of application, candidates should submit a curriculum vitae, graduate school transcripts (unofficial accepted), and three confidential letters of recommendation. 

The Sewanee English Department is committed to supporting its visiting and junior faculty members, as well as supporting faculty from underrepresented groups; the English Department has specific plans for the mentorship of VAPs in both their teaching and research, including optional participation in our faculty writing group, classroom observations, and syllabus preparation.
