Assistant Professor in Renaissance and Early Modern Italian Literature and Culture [Temporary Cover]

The Italian Section in the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics in the University of Cambridge is seeking to appoint a Fixed-Term Assistant Professor in Renaissance and Early Modern Italian Literature and Culture from 01st September 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter for a fixed term of three academic years to 01st July 2025. The vacancy has arisen as a result of an academic in the Faculty being appointed to the British School of Rome in a fixed-term role.

We invite applications from candidates with outstanding research and teaching potential in these areas of Italian Studies. The successful candidate will normally hold a PhD in Italian or the field of the post (or will by the start of the contract) and will have a record of, or clear potential for, outstanding research. Appointees will be expected to:

  • engage in high-level research,
  • seek opportunities to win external funding for that research,
  • publish in their specialist field(s),
  • teach and examine undergraduates,
  • supervise and examine MPhil and PhD postgraduate work,
  • contribute to Section and Faculty administration.

We seek a scholar specialised in Italian culture of the Renaissance/Early Modern period, broadly defined. We are particularly open to candidates with interdisciplinary interests who can work across a variety of fields in the Renaissance/early modern period, for example cultural history, visual culture, religious culture, and literary studies, and who will seek out and maintain interdisciplinary collaborations within and beyond the Faculty. Research on Italy's place within a global early modern context is very much of interest to the Section.

The applicant will be expected to teach Renaissance and Early Modern Literature and Culture to undergraduates at introductory, intermediate and advanced levels, as well as contribute to supervision and examining of MPhil and PhD students. Ability to teach and make connections beyond period and geographical boundaries is highly desirable. Ability to teach literary translation from Italian into English desirable.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential.
