Writing and Reasoning Program

Department of English

Southern Methodist University

Beginning August 2022

The Department of English at SMU seeks a full-time lecturer to teach composition and critical reasoning in the Writing and Reasoning Program (WRTR). The position is non-tenure-track and begins August 2022. Initial appointment is for one year and is renewable.

Writing and Reasoning courses are designed to help students develop strong writing and critical reasoning skills. These sequential courses emphasize critical reading and analytical thinking as the basis of effective writing, and provide the foundation for the Common Curriculum. Normal teaching load is 4/4, and the successful candidate will participate in the shared responsibilities of the Program faculty, including making occasional presentations at Program workshops and attending training and information sessions. Each lecturer receives departmental support for one conference per year. An M.A. in English, Rhetoric/Composition, or related field is required. Preference will be given to candidates with an M.A. or PhD in Rhetoric/Composition and a strong background in composition theory and writing pedagogy. Evidence of innovative and inclusive teaching in university-level composition courses is essential.

Applications must be submitted electronically via interfolio (http://apply.interfolio.com/107476) and should include a letter discussing teaching experience and pedagogical philosophy; an updated curriculum vitae; samples of syllabuses, writing assignments, and graded papers (limit 2 samples of each); official transcripts; and two letters of recommendation.

To ensure full consideration for the position, the application packet must be received by June 25, 2022, but the committee will continue to accept applications until the position is filled. Applications will be reviewed immediately and all applications will be acknowledged.
