Term Instructor – Japanese

George Mason University’s Department of Modern and Classical Languages on the Fairfax, VA campus, invites applications for a Term Instructor of Japanese (non-tenure-track), beginning August 2022. This position is renewable.

About the Department:

Holding to the vision of George Mason as being the most diverse university in Virginia, the Department of Modern and Classical Languages is home to fifteen foreign languages and offers a wide variety of courses in language, literature and culture from the introductory, advanced, and graduate levels. Responsibilities:

This position requires the successful candidate to offer twelve credit hours of Japanese language at various levels (primarily elementary and intermediate levels) per semester, hold office hours, and contribute to the department sponsored Japanese activities and the growth of the Japanese Studies Program, and participate in department service. Courses are taught both in person and online.

 

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must have native or near-native proficiency in Japanese and knowledge of English, holds a M.A in Japanese linguistics or a closely related field, and have a strong knowledge of second language acquisition. Applicants must have experience of teaching elementary and intermediate levels of Japanese language that incorporates Japanese cultural and social practices and etiquettes at the collegiate level. In addition, this position requires the applicant to teach courses each semester partially in person and partially online (synchronous and/or hybrid formats). Thus, applicants must have strong experience in teaching language in both the classroom and remote settings and demonstrate strong abilities to operate the Online Learning Management System.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Applicants who have expertise in the creation and implementation of online courses, as well as incorporating technology into the lessons are particularly welcome.
