The Humanities Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago is accepting applications for an Assistant Instructional Professor who will teach in and serve as administrative support for the Humanities/Arts Core sequence Poetry and the Human (“PATH”); in particular coordinating the Arts Core side of the course and a tutoring program component in the Humanities Core. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position which starts on September 1, 2022. It carries a two-year renewable term.
The Assistant Instructional Professor will teach five courses in Poetry and the Human over three quarters of each academic year. Under the direction of the sequence’s Faculty Core Chair, the Assistant Instructional Professor will also perform a two-course equivalent of non-classroom instructional and service duties which include organizing and administering a tutoring program in local public schools that is connected with PATH; for the Humanities sequence, helping to organize co-curricular (literary and academic) events for PATH’s students; and helping to coordinate book orders and other materials; for the Arts Core, developing and planning the program of instruction; coordinating the work of instructors; mentoring of graduate student instructors; and the coordination of weekly staff meetings of the Arts Core instructional staff.

The position requires a PhD or equivalent in a relevant humanistic discipline, substantial teaching experience at the college or post-secondary level, and evidence of pedagogical excellence. Successful candidates will have demonstrable expertise in the study and composition of poetry. Experience with teaching in both general education (core) curricula and creative writing pedagogy is preferred, as is experience teaching at the K12 level.
