Assistant/Associate Professor of Writing (Nonfiction)

The Writing Program of Columbia University School of the Arts seeks to fill a tenure-track/tenured position at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor of Writing in the field of Nonfiction to begin fall 2023. The Program offers the MFA in Writing and an undergraduate major in Creative Writing.

The Writing Program aims to attract dynamic and dedicated teachers with a significant publication history, a commitment to service, and a potential for leadership. The position's teaching load includes primarily graduate workshops and seminars, though there are opportunities to teach undergraduate workshops and seminars on occasion.

The Writing Program faculty teach workshops, seminars and, on occasion, lecture classes. Faculty also serve on rotation to direct the Nonfiction Concentration, to oversee the undergraduate creative Writing major as Director of Undergraduate Studies, or as Chair of the Writing Program. Graduate and undergraduate teaching experience is preferred, but commensurate experience in the field will be considered as well.

Columbia University School of the Arts offers Masters of Fine Arts Degrees in four disciplines: Film, Theatre, Visual Arts and Writing; a Masters of Arts degree in Film Studies; and undergraduate majors in Creative Writing, Film Studies and Visual Arts.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required. Master’s degree or equivalent experience preferred. Candidates for the Assistant/Associate Professor of Writing (Nonfiction) must have published at least one book with a nationally-recognized press. Candidates for the tenure-track assistant or associate professor should have an evident publishing trajectory, with evidence of significant monograph on the near horizon, if not already in hand and demonstrate the potential to make significant contributions in their field. Candidates for tenured associate professor position must have published at least one book with a nationally-recognized press, significant publications in hand, and a clear path of ongoing work and/or research. They must also possess a demonstrated capacity for creative work and exhibit the potential for continuing to make significant contributions to their professional and artistic fields as well as their areas of pedagogy. A strong commitment to the teaching of writers must be in evidence.
