Faculty Director of Classical and Liberal Education

The Core Curriculum at Flagler College embodies Flagler’s commitment to a modern version of a classical and liberal education, the principles of which structure Flagler’s general education curriculum and First Year Experience.

The Director works under the Dean of Academic Life as the lead supervisor and administrator of the Core programs in conjunction with the coordinators and directors of those programs – namely the First Year Seminar on Liberal Education and Citizenship; the FlagSHIP, and the broader Core General Education program.  This work would be done in close partnership with the Center for Advising and Core Experience (CACE) and its related support services.

The Director also teaches three courses per year in Core Curriculum programs (1 Fall FYS; 1 Spring Core; 1 FlagSHIP). The appointment is full-time, 12-month; though there is flexibility regarding on-campus hours over the summer.

The First Year Seminar on Liberal Education and Citizenship (FYS) is a freshman Seminar dedicated to introducing students to the Flagler College community and its Core Values, as well as the notion of liberal education that is the core philosophy of education at Flagler, through a combination of classic and contemporary texts.  It is the foundational class in Flagler’s Core/General Education program, more on which can be found here: https://www.flagler.edu/academics/cace/general-educationcore-curriculum/.  The FlagSHIP program is an intensive, experiential-learning focused course which functions as the capstone to the Core (https://www.flagler.edu/academics/flagship/) and takes place during either a two-week January interterm, or a 3-week May term.

Essential Duties:

  • Provides the leadership, vision and strategic direction of the Core Curriculum and the integration of its key programs and courses, working in close concert with the Faculty Director of Core General Education and the Coordinator of the FlagSHIP, and their respective committees (on which the Director is an Ex-Oficio member).
  • Serves as the Coordinator of the First Year Seminar on Liberal Education and Citizenship (FYS).  This work includes curriculum management; schedule planning; adjunct hiring and supervision; and training.  In conjunction with this work, works with various offices across campus to plan and execute Orientation for incoming Flagler students.
  • Will serve as Chair of the Department of Classical and Liberal Core Education once it is constituted.  The Department will be comprised of full-time faculty and post-doctoral teaching scholars whose primary teaching responsibilities will be in Flagler’s Core Curriculum.
  • Hires and supervises adjuncts teaching in the Core, in conjunction with the Faculty Director of Core General Education and the Literacy Mentors within the Core.
  • Works in conjunction with the Faculty Director of Core General Education and other personnel to design and run summer professional development training for Core and FYS faculty.
  • Works in conjunction with the Core Advisor and Coordinator to integrate the work between the Core Curriculum and its support and advising programs.
  • Serves as the chief administrative liaison between the Core Curriculum and offices/departments outside of Academic Affairs (Student Life; Business Office; Admissions; etc.)
  • Directs the vision of the Classical Institute and Liberal Education at Flagler in its outward-facing dimensions, including summer outreach and programming.
  • Teaches 3 courses per year (1 Fall FYS; 1 Spring Core; 1 FlagSHIP).  Additional teaching outside of regular hours would be paid at the faculty overload or summer rates.

Qualifications and Desired Experience:

  • PhD in an appropriate academic field
  • Rank of Associate Professor or higher preferred
  • A track record showing experience in and commitment to furthering classical and liberal education, as well as experience in First Year Experience and General Education
  • Familiarity with research and best practices in First Year Experience programming and pedagogy, and High Impact Practices
  • Experience coordinating and administrating work across campus offices
  • Experience supervising faculty; both full and part-time
