Assistant Professor of Japanese Language and Asian Studies

The Program in Asian Studies at Bates College, a private liberal arts college located in central Maine with a rich history of diverse coeducation, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Japanese Language and Asian Studies to begin August 2023. We seek applicants with expertise in pre-modern Japan and with broader interdisciplinary interests.

The successful candidate will contribute to an interdisciplinary program in which students study Japanese and Chinese languages as well as cultures in Asia. The successful candidate will be committed to teaching Japanese language at all levels. The teaching load is five courses per year: typically two courses in Japanese language and three in Asian studies, which may be cross-listed with the Program in Classical & Medieval Studies (https://www.bates.edu/classical-medieval). Additional responsibilities include academic advising of majors, directing of individual senior theses, teaching first-year seminars, and service.

The college and the program encourage applications from individuals capable of contributing to our ongoing commitment to equity, inclusion, access, antiracism and educational justice. Candidates with demonstrated success in teaching students who are historically underrepresented and marginalized are encouraged to apply. We welcome applications from individuals from underrepresented groups in the professoriate, including individuals who have followed non-traditional pathways to college; individuals who have faced societal, economic, or academic disadvantages; and individuals with a demonstrated commitment to applying and including diverse backgrounds and perspectives to teaching, scholarship, service, and leadership in the academy. Consideration of applications will begin November 1, 2022, and continue until the position is filled.
