Assistant Professor of Japanese Language and Asian Studies

The Program in Asian Studies at Bates College, a private liberal arts college located in central Maine with a rich history of diverse coeducation, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Japanese Language and Asian Studies to begin August 2023. We seek applicants with expertise in pre-modern Japan and with broader interdisciplinary interests.

The successful candidate will contribute to an interdisciplinary program in which students study Japanese and Chinese languages as well as cultures in Asia. The successful candidate will be committed to teaching Japanese language at all levels. The teaching load is five courses per year: typically two courses in Japanese language and three in Asian studies, which may be cross-listed with the Program in Classical & Medieval Studies ( Additional responsibilities include academic advising of majors, directing of individual senior theses, teaching first-year seminars, and service.

Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. in Japanese Studies or a related field, by the time of appointment. Candidates must specialize in pre-modern Japan and be committed to teaching Japanese language courses. Superior proficiency in Japanese and English is required.

Applicants should submit the following items: 1) a cover letter; 2) a curriculum vitae, including the names of three recommenders (one of whom should be able to speak to the applicant’s background in language pedagogy); 3) a teaching statement (no more than two pages) describing teaching philosophy, commitment to inclusive and evidence-based pedagogies, and experience with both language and culture courses; 4) a statement (no more than two pages) on how research, teaching, and service interests might advance the college's goals of equity, inclusion, access, antiracism, and educational justice; 5) transcripts from your graduate institution(s). Applicants invited for a first-round interview (to be conducted via Zoom) will be asked to submit three confidential letters of recommendation, a sample of written research (published or not), and sample course syllabi. Employment is contingent on successful completion of a background check.
