Job Description:

 

The English Department of Baruch College, CUNY, invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor with a specialization in early American Literature (from the Colonial period to 1865) and hemispheric studies. We are seeking a scholar whose scope of expertise includes literature of the Americas and/or the Caribbean and who can situate multiple textual modes and genres within their historical and material contexts. Areas of focus could include African- American and Africana Studies, the transatlantic slave trade, Indigenous literature, the range of early Puritan texts, and the development of literary genres, such as poetry, fiction (e.g., the novel or the short story), and essays within the United States. The Department also would welcome applicants with subspecialties in the areas of gender and sexuality and/or disability studies. Teaching opportunities will include courses in early American literature, Great Works of Literature (our college-wide world literature requirement), First-Year Writing, and other courses within the successful candidate’s research and teaching purview.

Qualifications:

Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
