The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures is a diverse group of educators proficient in many areas of specialization across linguistics, literature, and interdisciplinary cultural studies. Faculty do research in areas such as French celebrity culture, French Afro-feminist performance cultures, various aspects of Latin American Studies, Spanish cinema, the literature of colonial North India, Chinese science fiction, Arab literature, ecocriticism and environmental humanities and bilingual Spanish dialects in North Carolina.

The Department is comprised of 18 tenured or tenured track professors, 47 professional track faculty and 26 graduate teaching assistants. Currently, the Department has about 168 undergraduate major students and 37 graduate students.

As one of the ten academic departments and units in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers an undergraduate major in FLL, with concentrations in 14 different languages including Arabic, Ancient Greek, Chinese, English as a Second Language, French, German Studies, Hindi-Urdu, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. Students who are eager to make teaching their career can pursue the B.A. Degree in French or Spanish Education. We also offer minors in the following: Arabic, Chinese, Classics (Greek and Latin, French, German, Hindi/Urdu, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. In addition, the department offers courses in Persian and Portuguese.

At the graduate level, the Department offers an M.A. Program in Foreign Languages and Literatures with three separate concentrations in French, Spanish, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures also provides students with additional opportunities beyond NC State University.  We have an inter-institutional collaboration with other institutions in the UNC system, the UNC Language Exchange program students.
