The Department of English and the Program in African American Studies at the University of Iowa invite applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor with a specialization in African American Literary and Cultural Studies. We seek a dynamic scholar and teacher who works in any area of 19th, 20th, and/or 21st century African American literary and cultural studies. This is a tenure-track position. Teaching will be at the undergraduate and graduate levels, with a normal load of two courses per semester. This position requires committee responsibilities that contribute to the management of each department, and the university.


Required qualifications for the Assistant Professor position: PhD degree in English, African American Studies, or related field in hand by July 15th, 2020; evidence of expertise in African American literature and culture; evidence of effective teaching at the university level; promising research and publication potential. Desired qualifications: a published article in the field; demonstrated ability to teach an African American literature survey course. Required qualifications for the Associate Professor position: PhD degree in English, African American Studies, or related field; evidence of expertise in African American literature and culture; evidence of effective teaching at the university level; a strong record of scholarly publication in the field with a peer-reviewed book in print or in production. Desired qualifications: a publication from a prospective second book in the field; demonstrated ability to teach an African American literature survey course.
