The Department of German at Colgate University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-stream position in German literary and cultural studies at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning fall semester 2023.
Completion of Ph.D. is required prior to or shortly after the date of hire. The successful candidate will stand ready to teach in all aspects of the undergraduate German curriculum as well as demonstrate interdisciplinary expertise and a teaching and research focus in the literature and culture of the 19th and 20th centuries. We are particularly interested in candidates with interests in environmental humanities, gender studies, art and aesthetics, or transnational/multiethnic and colonial/postcolonial cultures in German-speaking contexts. The teaching load is five courses a year, covering language, literature, and culture courses, regular participation in the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum, and cross-listed courses in appropriate programs according to interdisciplinary expertise. Teaching and service responsibilities include leading the department’s semester-long study abroad program in Freiburg in rotation with other department members. Candidates should show scholarly promise, a strong commitment to excellence in teaching in language, literature and culture, and native or near-native fluency in German.
Colgate strives to be a community supportive of diverse perspectives and identities. In their letter of application, candidates must describe their ability to work effectively with students across a wide range of identities and backgrounds, and explain how their teaching, scholarship and community service might support the university’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
