Assistant Professor in Latinx Literature and Culture

Position Description
The Department of English at the University of Washington, Seattle invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in Latinx Literature and Culture. Within this area of specialization, successful candidates will be expected to engage in research and teaching interests in: Latinx aesthetics and cultural forms, Latinx literary history, multi- or bilingual approaches to literary and cultural study, and decolonial approaches to literary and cultural study. We are also interested in candidates whose work engages with questions of: Latinx literature from the 19th and early 20th centuries, border writing and hemispheric American studies, Latinx indigeneity studies, Afro-Latinx studies, print culture and history of the book, transnational and diaspora studies, translation studies.

With our new colleague, we look forward to deepening interdisciplinary connections with the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies and other units across the three University of Washington campuses that engage in Latinx studies. Teaching duties will include Latinx courses as well as general and/or special topics in lower, upper division, and graduate courses. We welcome a new colleague who would engage in mentoring Latinx students and may engage in Latinx community outreach in Seattle and/or the state of Washington; we value applications that describe how these activities might be developed. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. This position has an anticipated start date of September 2023 and will have a 9-month service period.

Applicants must have by the start of the appointment a Ph.D., or foreign equivalent, in English, Spanish, Comparative Literature, or related field, with a record of research and teaching experience rooted in Latinx literature and culture. Successful candidates will demonstrate a compelling and engaging research profile; a record of (or promise for) excellence in teaching undergraduate- and graduate-level courses; capacity to supervise and mentor graduate students; research competence in Spanish and English; and commitment to active participation in departmental, university, and/or professional service. The successful candidate will also show evidence of experience with and/or concrete plans for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in and out of the classroom, including a commitment to working with a diverse student body and to fostering inclusivity.
