As part of an Anti-Racism Faculty Hiring Initiative, the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies (DAAS) at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) invites applications for a tenure-track advanced assistant or beginning associate professor in Black Urban Studies/Urban Humanities with particular emphasis in Black culture and the urban environment and a strong commitment to community-engaged learning. We are interested in candidates whose research and teaching engage critical studies of race, gender, and class in an urban context, and who have demonstrated expertise in anti-racist research methods and teaching.
Areas of research and teaching expertise in Black literary and/or cultural life that intersect with environmental and social justice, urban inclusive development, economic resilience, Afro-Futurism, sustainability, public health, housing advocacy, mobility, transportation, and any other areas germane to Black urban life. Although prior engagement with Detroit is not a requirement, we would hope that the successful candidate will want to build partnerships with communities in Detroit as an integral part of their teaching and research. Within the university’s Anti-Racism Faculty Hiring Initiative, this position is part of a cluster hire in the urban humanities across campus.

• Evidence of teaching excellence (i.e., student evaluations of teaching, course syllabi, teaching awards that can be parts of a teaching portfolio).
*a personal statement and diversity statement that demonstrates your commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through scholarship/research, and/or teaching/mentoring, and/or service/engagement. There may be some overlap with your research proposal and teaching statements (1-3 pages).
In addition, candidates should provide three letters of recommendation.

This is a university-year appointment with an expected start date of August 28, 2023. Interested applicants are required to hold a Ph.D. prior to the appointment. Applicants must demonstrate evidence of excellence in both teaching and research.
