The Department of German and Italian Studies at Smith College invites applications for a full-time tenure track position in the area of transnational Italian Studies with a preference for specialists in Early Modern Studies. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2023.
Applicants must have earned a PhD in Italian Studies or a related area in the humanities, and have a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching both culture and language. Fluency in spoken and written Italian at the highest level of proficiency is essential. Knowledge of other languages is desirable, as we seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen our emphasis on transnational studies. The successful candidate will be an active interdisciplinary scholar whose research and teaching will combine expertise which exceeds the traditional field of Italian Studies. A demonstrated ability to teach courses in Medieval/Renaissance studies is a requirement, and therefore preference will be given to candidates working in that field.
Possible areas of research specialization include but are not limited to: Global Early Modern Studies, Book and Media Studies, Cultural Studies, Diaspora and Migration Studies, Gender Studies, Race and Ethnicity Studies, Mediterranean Studies, Art and Visual Studies.
The successful candidate will be appointed in the Department of German and Italian Studies, where they will teach and be creatively engaged in the department’s transnational approach. We welcome applications from scholars whose work expands beyond the canonical study of Italian culture and brings a variety of transversal, interdisciplinary and ethically-informed perspectives to the field.
Demonstrated familiarity with both online and in-person pedagogical practices is required. Successful candidates should be prepared to engage with diverse students across the liberal arts and actively attract them to the study of humanities.
