Distinguished Visiting Professor of English

The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) Department of English and Fine Arts is seeking applicants for a Visiting Faculty Program position for academic year 2020-2021. The purpose of the USAFA Visiting Faculty Program, begun in 1975, is to supplement the Air Force Academy faculty by providing for the temporary assignment of civilians with extensive experience and diverse expertise from other institutions of higher education including Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Institutions. These civilian educators bring vital expertise to the Air Force and take back to their permanent positions a broadened awareness of the Air Force Academy environment. In the process, these educators enhance their own professional development.

Visiting faculty members will be temporarily detailed to the Federal government. They will remain an employee of their institution of higher education for most purposes. The period of assignment will normally be for approximately eleven months (approximately 1 July through 31 May). Visiting faculty members will continue to receive their salary from their institution of higher education. The Air Force Academy will reimburse the institution for the salary and the employer's contribution for basic fringe benefits such as health and life insurance, retirement, and social security. Depending on the type of contract used and the contractual agreements, the Air Force Academy may pay for reasonable moving expenses to and from the Academy. Depending upon availability, visiting faculty members may be authorized to reside on the Air Force Academy in government housing at the fair market rental rate. Complete responsibility is entrusted to visiting faculty members to fully use their capabilities in their areas of expertise. Because department needs and visiting faculty members' areas of expertise vary, the particular duties will be determined by the Department Head and the visiting faculty member. Visiting faculty members will be among the select few civilian faculty or government personnel who have been chosen because of their outstanding contributions to education and/or research in their respective fields.

Qualifications: To be eligible for the Visiting Faculty Program, visiting professors must be tenured faculty (Associate or Full Professor) at their home institution before beginning their Academy assignment; must return to their home institution following their temporary Academy assignment; must be a U.S. citizen. Visiting Professors must also possess a PhD in Literature or a closely related field. All literary concentrations are welcomed to apply. Candidates will be expected to teach the department’s core courses, such as freshman composition and sophomore literature, as well as upper-division courses in English and Fine Arts and the Humanities. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated excellence and innovation in undergraduate teaching. Of special interest are candidates who can contribute to the department’s new digital humanities and creative arts’ program.
