Assistant Professor of English and Associate/Full Professor of English

The Department of English at Washington University in St. Louis is seeking to fill two tenure- track positions, one at the rank of Assistant Professor and one at the rank of Associate Professor or (full) Professor. We seek scholars whose critical work lies in any of the historical fields of literatures in English (medieval, early modern, American literature of all periods, Victorian, modernist, postcolonial, post-45 and so forth) and who bring to their scholarship the dimension of “creative practice.” We imagine creative practice broadly, including but not limited to any form of writing or work that engages a broader public, building on strong foundations of scholarship. At the Assistant Professor level, we seek a scholar and teacher of exceptional promise, whose research has developed within a historical period or field of English literature, but who also demonstrates interest in the public humanities, writing for a general audience, or addressing an audience with literary interests in non-traditional ways. The genres and periods of specialization are open. At the Associate/Full level, we seek a scholar and teacher of recognized achievement, whose work bridges scholarship and creative practice. Genres and periods of specialization remain open. A Ph.D. in English or a closely related field is required by the start of the appointment for each position, which carries a teaching expectation of two courses per semester and will begin in the Fall of 2023. Candidates for the Associate Professor or Professor rank should have an outstanding teaching, service, and publication record commensurate with tenure at that rank.  Duties include teaching, conducting research, writing for publication, advising students, participating in departmental governance and university service. The two professors hired will have opportunities to participate in and build a new Arts and Sciences initiative called The Center for Literary Arts.

Application materials—a letter of interest, a CV, and a research statement—for both the Assistant and Associate/Full Professor positions should be submitted via Interfolio, using this link: http://apply.interfolio.com/112387. Letters of reference, writing samples, and teaching statements are not required at this time; these may be requested at a further stage in the process.

The search committee will begin their review of applications for the Assistant Professor position on 20 September, 2022. We plan to do Zoom interviews for selected candidates for the Assistant Professor position in early November, with campus visits to follow in late November and early December.

The search committee will begin their review of applications for the Associate/Full Professor position on 15 November, 2022. We plan to do Zoom interviews for selected candidates for the Associate Professor/Professor position in January, with campus visits to follow in February.
