Assistant Professor - Media

The Department of Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor in the field of History and Theory of Media. Appointment will begin on August 28, 2023, and will be 100%-time over a 9-month academic year.

We seek a scholar with demonstrated potential for a strong international profile in the theoretical and interdisciplinary humanities, whose work traverses the domains of word, image, and sound, and employs, at its foundation, a global, comparative, and transnational perspective. Areas of specialization may include: the relations between digital and analog as well as between “new” and “old” media; media and the Marxist critique of political economy; media and postcolonial/global South studies and/or critical race/ethnic studies; the mutual constitution of film, literature, visual arts and other forms and practices as media; the role of media in music and sound; philosophical and theoretical genealogies of mediation; and the centrality of media to the interplay between aesthetics and politics. We invite applications from scholars employing a range of methods—theoretical, historical, textual, and/or ethnographic—as well as experimental, practice-informed approaches.

• Ph.D. or terminal degree must be completed by the starting date of the position, August 28, 2023
• Demonstrated ability to work outside of and across traditional disciplines

Preferred Qualifications

• Fluency or proficiency in a language other than English
• Demonstrable training in at least two distinct disciplinary fields
