tenure-track Assistant Professor in African Canadian Studies and/or African American Literature

Position description

The Department of English at McGill University invites applications for a tenure-track position in African Canadian and/or African American literature. Complementary expertise in Black diasporic and transnational literatures, cultures, and media is highly desirable. The candidate will join a Department of English that brings together three related areas of study – literature, drama and theatre, and cultural studies – and actively promotes research and teaching across specialist boundaries.

McGill University is a public research university with an international faculty and student body located in the vibrant, multicultural city of Montréal, Québec, Canada. This position is part of a multi-year interdisciplinary initiative designed to strengthen and support research innovation and excellence in African and Black Studies at McGill, while simultaneously addressing the under-representation of Black faculty in the tenure stream, as laid out in the University Action Plans to Address Anti-Black Racism 2020-2025. In addition to the Dr. Kenneth Melville McGill Black Faculty & Staff Caucus, institutional resources available specifically to Black faculty are listed here: https://www.mcgill.ca/antiblackracism/resources/faculty. Such supports are accompanied by a suite of equity-focussed initiatives at all levels of the university.

This position is at the rank of Assistant Professor. The appointment begins 1 August 2023. Inquiries about this position may be sent to the Chair of the hiring committee, Professor Katherine Zien (katherine.zien@mcgill.ca) and/or the Chair of the Department, Professor Erin Hurley (erin.hurley@mcgill.ca). Information about the Department, its programs, and courses may be found at www.mcgill.ca/english/.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will be ready to participate in the intellectual and pedagogical life of the Department and the University, as well as in faculty governance and service. Responsibilities include: conducting original research; developing a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in keeping with the Department’s areas of study; and contributing as an academic citizen to the department, faculty, and university. The standard teaching load in the Department of English is 4 courses (12 credits) per academic year.
