Assistant Professor of English

The Austin College Department of English invites applications for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of English in ethnic American literatures, specializing in African American, Asian American, Latinx, and/or Native American literature. Candidates must have PhD in hand before the position begins in August 2023.

The Department is in the process of developing an innovative new curriculum that better reflects the needs, experiences, and identities of our students, and this open position emerges from that goal. Our curriculum seeks to foreground issues of ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality, disability, and socio-economic status with coursework that highlights public-facing activities and humanities labs in tandem with our “Pathways to a Just Society” Mellon grant. With a majority-minority student body and a growing number of first-generation and Pell-eligible students, Austin College fosters a culture of inclusion. The position involves teaching introductory to upper-level undergraduate writing and literature courses for both majors and non-majors, as well as First-Year Seminars and January Terms. The teaching load is three courses every fall and spring semester and a January Term course every other year. We invite candidates who prioritize innovative teaching in a liberal arts environment and whose teaching, scholarship, and professional goals reflect the College’s liberal arts curriculum, including the new general degree requirements (Global Diversity; Systems of Power, Privilege, and Inequality) and the writing curriculum.
