The University of Georgia (UGA), the flagship public, land-grant and sea-grant university of the state of Georgia, seeks an experienced and energetic leader to serve as the next Vice Provost for Academic Affairs. Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, the Vice Provost assists with all matters of academic administration, policy, and planning and leads campus-wide initiatives at the direction of the Provost. Founded in 1785 as the first public university in the country, the University of Georgia is one of the leading public research universities in the nation and the world.  In Fall 2021, UGA enrolled 40,118 students, employed more than 3,000 faculty, and had an annual budget of nearly $2 billion. Recently, major investments in research have led UGA to international leadership in areas such as infectious diseases, data science and artificial intelligence, vaccine development, glycoscience, precision agriculture, human trafficking, resilience and environment, cognitive and behavioral neuroscience, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship, and many others.

The Vice Provost works closely with a wide range of university stakeholders and units reporting to the Provost, acting on behalf of the Provost when the Provost is unavailable. The Vice Provost advises the Provost on a number of key academic appointments and appeals processes, faculty development, promotion and tenure, retention, and related issues. The Louise McBee Institute for Higher Education, the UGA Performing Arts Center and the Georgia Museum of Art report to the Vice Provost. The Assistant Provost & Campus Director of the Griffin Campus has a dual report to the Vice Provost along with the Dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. In addition, the Vice Provost chairs the UGA Arts Council.


Minimum/Required Qualifications:


  • A terminal degree.
  • A demonstrated record of excellence in teaching, research and service, and be eligible for appointment as full professor with tenure at time of appointment.
  • At least two years of experience as a Department Head, Associate Dean, or leader of a large center or institute in a university setting.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies


  • The ability to be an energetic and enthusiastic academic leader with a successful record of administrative leadership in higher education.
  • A thorough understanding of the programs that comprise a large public research university.
  • A principled advocate for the institution’s tripartite mission, “to teach, to serve, and to inquire into the nature of things.”
  • Have a deep commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • The ability to work independently and efficiently.
  • A strong manager with good budgetary skills who is results-oriented and skilled at problem solving.
  • The ability to work in a collaborative manner with senior administrators, the academic leadership in the 18 schools and colleges plus the Augusta University/UGA Medical Partnership, and across the University.
