The Department of Asian Studies at Cornell University welcomes applications for a tenure-track/early tenure position at the Assistant or early Associate Professor level. This professorship in Trans-Asia Critical Humanities reexamines Asia conceptually within and beyond area studies. Applications are welcome from candidates working in, or across, any region(s) of Asia. Candidates must possess proficiency in one or more Asian languages as well as the demonstrated ability to speak conceptually to broad audiences across disciplinary and area studies boundaries. Fields of potential, but not exhaustive, interest to the department include: critical race theory; displacement; new materialism; critical area studies; migration; and intermediality.

Candidates should be prepared to contribute to the undergraduate curriculum through courses in their fields of specialization as well as through survey and gateway courses. The successful candidate will enter a department that approaches Asian Humanities from diverse disciplinary and theoretical arenas, including literature, film, media and visual culture, literary and intellectual history, religious studies, the investigation of imperial and colonial cultural processes, gender and sexuality, translation studies, and study of modernities. While the Department of Asian Studies constitutes the teaching and tenure home for this position, the successful candidate will also make contributions to one or more of Cornell University’s thematic and area studies programs. Ph.D. in hand by July 1, 2023, and publishing record or strong potential for publishing is important.
