Spanish Lecturer

The Language and Literature Department at Saint Xavier University invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure track Spanish Lecturer position. This is a 9- month position with the opportunity for summer work that will begin in January 2023.This position is a 5-year appointment with possible renewal after 5 years, subject to institutional needs and job performance.

The successful candidate will teach 3 Spanish language courses per semester (6 courses in total per academic year). The position also has a second component in which the individual will serve as Copy Editor for Spanish content for the Spanish media component at the University (Xavierite and WXAV) during the summer months.

Requirements include native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English; PhD in Second Language Acquisition, Applied Linguistics, Spanish or in a field related to Spanish language instruction (MA in Spanish and ABDs may be considered) with demonstrated successful language teaching experience at the college/university level and ability to work effectively with educational technologies used in language teaching and learning.

A research profile in foreign language and familiarity with the ACTFL proficiency guidelines is highly desired since the Lecturer, in collaboration with the members of the Language and Literature Department, will lead enhancements to SXU’s existing Spanish/Secondary Education and Spanish for the Professions curriculums by developing and teaching specific courses focused on Spanish-language content related to distinct career tracks such as Medical Spanish, Business Spanish, Social Services Spanish as well as Translation and Interpretation. The existing curriculum allows students to leverage Spanish bilingualism in preparation for careers that require a strong understanding of more than one language and culture. The Lecturer will work with various constituencies on campus to continue building Spanish language focused content and advise students in various related academic programs.
