Assistant Professor of French

The Department of Romance, German and Slavic Languages and Literatures at The George Washington University invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of French, starting as early as fall 2023. We are seeking candidates with expertise in Medieval and/or Early Modern French literature and culture. We encourage applications from candidates engaged in cross-chronological and transnational research, and whose teaching and research include Mediterranean studies, Global Medieval/Early Modern, Black Atlantic, and study of visual and/or material culture.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities: The position entails teaching undergraduate courses in French language and courses in literature and culture in French and English.

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in French or related field with specialization in Medieval and/or Early Modern Literature and Culture by date of appointment; evidence of strong potential for scholarship as demonstrated by publications and/or works in progress; evidence of teaching excellence and innovative pedagogy at the undergraduate level; and native or near-native fluency in French and English.
