The Modern Language Association (MLA) seeks an administrative assistant for a full-time position to work collaboratively with the MLA staff in our convention and events office. 


  • Provides administrative assistance to the department
  • Assists with preparing and distributing materials for the Program Committee
  • Works with the director to communicate with forum executive committees on convention sessions and forum reviews 
  • Monitors the general convention e-mail account and works with other members of the department to answer questions or forward messages to the appropriate staff members
  • Assists with administrative tasks related to MLA meetings and events 
  • Maintains expense records for the Program Committee, for convention programs staff travel, and for convention-related expenses


  • A bachelor's degree required, preferably in a field of language or literature
  • At least six months of cumulative clerical or administrative experience 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Google Workspace, and Zoom scheduling
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Solid organizational and interpersonal skills

This is a full-time, hybrid position, with an in-person requirement of one or more days a week at the MLA’s office in downtown Manhattan. Salary is commensurate with experience, in the range of $47,000–$51,000. The MLA provides generous vacation and sick time, flexible work hours, a 403(b) retirement plan, and individual health and dental plans with no shared premium cost. You must be able to work legally in New York State.
