The Department of Hispanic Studies at Brown University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in the area of modern Iberian literatures and cultures and the Global Hispanophone (18th-21st centuries). We are interested in scholars of peninsular Spain with a broad global perspective who can contribute to the department's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through service, mentorship, teaching and scholarship. We encourage applicants whose research encompasses any of the cultural-linguistic traditions of Spain (including Basque, Catalonian, and Galician) and / or who study Spanish literary and cultural production in transatlantic, transpacific, and African contexts. We are especially interested in applicants who center race in their work, and also welcome candidates who would complement the department's cross-disciplinary strengths in performance, visual, urban, or environmental studies. Further, the Department of Hispanic Studies is keenly interested in diversifying and encourages applications from diverse candidates.
The successful applicant will demonstrate exceptional promise as a rigorous and dynamic scholar for whom excellence in research is interwoven with a proven dedication to inclusive teaching and mentorship of undergraduates and graduate students. They will also contribute to the intellectual life of the department and wider university, supporting our efforts to build a diverse scholarly environment. A PhD in Spanish or equivalent degree is required by the position start date, July 1, 2023. Special consideration will be given to candidates who received the PhD within the past five years. Near-native or native Spanish fluency is expected.
