Assistant Professor - Humanities
The Department of Humanities at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, PA invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position. Review of applications will begin October 15, 2022, and continue until the positions are filled.
The department consists of 10 primary faculty members with training in anthropology, bioethics, clinical ethics, cultural studies, English, and nursing, as well as over 25 joint faculty members, most of whom have primary clinical appointments. Department faculty are heavily involved in medical education and are engaged in conceptual, empirical, and translational scholarship. All faculty share a commitment to community engagement. The Kienle Center for Humanistic Medicine and Center Stage Arts in Health, both of which run programs for the College of Medicine and Penn State Health, are housed in the department. The department also supports Wild Onions, an arts and literature journal edited by medical students, as well as the Gold Humanism Honor Society, and serves as the academic home of the Journal of Medical Humanities.
The department's mission is to advance humanism in medicine and society. Individually and collectively, we value justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in our scholarship, teaching, and service. We strive to end racism and other forms of discrimination, act fairly and respectfully to all, improve our understanding of inequality, and learn about the specific needs and experiences of communities and cultural groups that are under threat. As we do so, we are committed to fostering an environment of inclusivity and antiracism and to being learners in this process. Recent efforts include revising Humanities coursework to focus on social justice and cohosting an annual diversity reading group with the library.
This position will have dedicated effort in clinical ethics consultation at Hershey Medical Center. We seek faculty members from diverse backgrounds and training who are dedicated to humanities research and teaching in academic medicine and who are comfortable working in a multidisciplinary context. In addition to expertise in clinical ethics, desirable areas of expertise include medical history, race and ethnicity studies, art history, arts education, and graphic medicine. Candidates with expertise in other fields are also invited to apply. Experience or a demonstrated interest in graduate medical education (resident education) would be a plus. Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in research, teaching, and engagement.
Required qualifications: terminal degree (MD, DO, PhD, MFA, JD, DA, DNP); expertise in and experience with clinical ethics consultation
Desired qualifications: experience in academic medicine; research, teaching, and/or engagement with social and economic justice topics; experience in highly collaborative educational and research contexts; experience with externally funded research
