Instructor or Professorial Lecturer in Arabic

The Department of World Languages and Cultures in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a term faculty appointment beginning Spring Semester 2023 and continuing through Academic Year 2023-2024. Rank will be dependent on experience and stature in the field. The appointment will commence on January 1, 2023.

Applicants should hold a PhD or other terminal degree in Arabic language, Arabic language pedagogy, Arabic linguistics, or Arabic literature on or before January 1, 2022. Highly qualified applicants with a master’s degree in these disciplines will be considered. Applicants should be proficient in Modern Standard Arabic and at least one Arabic dialect, in addition to spoken and written English. Arabic teaching experience at the university level and evidence of teaching excellence are required. Applicants should be able to teach at all levels of Arabic language instruction, and should be familiar with innovative teaching methodologies and with the use of technology in the classroom. The position will require the incumbent to teach five to six undergraduate courses per year in Arabic (based on the six-course load detailed in the Faculty Manual). Apart from being an outstanding instructor, we expect the incumbent to show the ability to inspire students, serve as a mentor to them, and get them excited about the Arabic language and its cultures. All faculty are expected to hold office hours and participate in School and University activities and service.
