Illinois Wesleyan University invites applications for the tenure line position of Assistant Professor in the English Department. This position will begin in Fall 2023. Salary is competitive and provides excellent benefits.
Founded in 1850, Illinois Wesleyan University is a highly competitive small liberal arts institution located in Bloomington, Ill.
The English Department offers a major with concentrations in Literature and Writing. We offer minors in English, Creative Writing, and Journalism and Communication. A significant percentage of our English majors also major in Education Studies. Many of our students study abroad, receive academic credit for internships, pursue independent studies, and conduct honors research. The English Department is committed to increasing the diversity of the campus community.
Candidates must have a PhD in English, American Studies, Comparative Literature, or a related field by August 1, 2023. We seek candidates who specialize in and can deliver engaging courses that focus on African American literature, Asian American literature, diasporic studies, disability studies, gender studies, queer studies, global literatures, Latinx literature, and/or Native American literature. Preference will be given to candidates who can also teach American literatures before 1900.
Candidates must be dedicated to undergraduate education, enthusiastic about professional engagement with students in and out of the classroom, and able to work in teams in a collegial environment.
This position requires one to be an active scholar and a skillful teacher. The typical teaching load is three classes per semester. Tenure track faculty members also provide academic advising to students and participate in department and university service.
