Liberal Studies at New York University invites applications for four Clinical Assistant Professor positions to begin September 1, 2023, pending administrative and budgetary approval.
The Liberal Studies Core is a dynamic liberal arts curriculum that provides a global and interdisciplinary foundation for nearly 100 NYU majors. The Global Liberal Studies Bachelor of Arts is an innovative global studies major grounded in the spatial, conceptual, and temporal understandings of a highly interconnected world, with a program of study that is distinguished by experiential learning, study away, and independent research focused in an interdisciplinary concentration. In both the LS Core and the GLS Major, small, seminar-style classes and close faculty-student interaction ensure the benefits of a liberal arts college within a large urban research university. We are especially interested in hiring qualified candidates who can contribute through their research, teaching and service to the diversity and excellence of the Liberal Studies community.
We seek applicants for the following positions:
PhD in Astronomy, Physics, or related fields. Candidates must have experience and demonstrated success with teaching undergraduate astronomy and the ability to teach natural science courses for non-science majors. Candidates must have the ability to teach “History of the Universe”, which covers the origin and development of stars, galaxies, planetary systems, and the universe itself, as well as the study of the earth, the development of life on earth, and its potential to exist elsewhere in the universe. Candidates are expected to demonstrate experience teaching science courses with a global and interdisciplinary perspective and the ability to teach about the science of technology. Successful candidates may be provided opportunities to develop and teach upper-division undergraduate seminars focused on global environmental issues or sustainability.
PhD in Musicology, Music Studies, Music History, Ethnography, Ethnomusicology, or related field. Candidates should be a music historian, ethnomusicologist, or other music studies specialist with expertise in popular music studies and/or global studies, and must have the ability to develop upper-division seminars on global music studies and/or creative production of contemporary music in a global context. Candidates must also have the ability to teach with a global, interdisciplinary, and intersectional emphasis in the Arts and Cultures sequence of the Core Curriculum with an emphasis on the cross-cultural exchange of the arts produced across the globe in a variety of media, or in Global Cultures, which introduces undergraduates to politics, history, intellectual thought, and development within and across geographically defined global contexts, interrogating the historical and interconnected roots of current geopolitical and cultural challenges.
SOCIAL AND POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY OR POLITICAL THEORY
PhD in Philosophy, History, or Politics, with a focus on contemporary comparative political theory or global justice theory. Candidates must have the ability to develop upper-division seminars that include non-Western approaches to political theory, political philosophy, or global justice in the Politics, Rights and Development concentration. Candidates are also expected to draw on ancient and early modern sources in their teaching with a global, interdisciplinary emphasis in the Global Works and Society sequence of the Core Curriculum. Candidates must embrace interdisciplinary and intersectional approaches from a variety of global perspectives and must have the ability to examine relationships of power and to interrogate the historical roots of current challenges.
ARTS, CULTURES, AND THE ENVIRONMENT: Global Antiquities / Global Middle Ages
PhD in the humanities, broadly conceived (Comparative Literature, Art History, East Asian Studies, Near Eastern Studies, Classics, World Arts and Literatures, and related fields), with a focus on pre-modern environmental humanities. Candidates must be able to develop upper-division seminars concerning arts, cultures, and the environment, and teach with a global, interdisciplinary, and intersectional focus in the Arts and Cultures sequence of the Core Curriculum. This sequence requires exposure, training, and methodological background to teach undergraduate students about literature, as well as visual, sonic, and/or performance arts produced around the world, including in traditionally underrepresented areas from antiquity to early modern times.
Minimum qualifications: PhD by the date of appointment; three years of college-level teaching experience; and demonstrated excellence in teaching. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who share Liberal Studies’ commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and who can contribute to the diversity of intellectual life in LS and NYU. Candidates must present demonstrated experience and commitment to interdisciplinarity, intersectionality, and a teaching approach informed by global perspectives. Publications and evidence of outstanding scholarship and relevant professional activity are strongly encouraged.
All Liberal Studies full-time faculty hold renewable term contracts, initially three years, and later five years in duration. Faculty are eligible for promotion within the Clinical faculty ranks (Assistant, Associate, Full). Faculty normally teach three classes per semester, advise undergraduates, and contribute service to Liberal Studies and to the University.
