The Department of German at UC Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Professor (tenure track) of German with a focus on one or more of the following areas: German Film and Media, Modern Literature, Applied Language Studies, Translation, or Digital Humanities. The position entails broad competence in at least one of the focus areas, demonstrable either through formal study or publication record, and excellence in teaching. The successful candidate will teach a broad range of undergraduate and graduate courses in the field and is expected to be able to teach at least one of the core requirements for the major.

The Department of German at UC Berkeley is known for innovative cross-disciplinary research and a dynamic intellectual atmosphere. Faculty in the Department of German benefit from working at a vibrant world-class university that holds expansive libraries, archives, and museums, enabling pioneering work in the humanities, arts and sciences. Our research and teaching engage the full range of German language and literature, philosophy, and visual media from the Middle Ages to the digital era. Building on language specificity, historical depth, and theoretical inquiry, our graduate students take a variety of Designated Emphases such as Critical Theory, Film and Media, Women and Gender Studies. All our classes promote thinking across national borders. The Department also maintains lively programs in Dutch and Yiddish. Graduates from our PhD program teach at universities and colleges across the country and abroad. The Department of German entertains a lively network of research connections with multiple centers on campus and universities around the world.
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Applicants for this position must hold a PhD (or equivalent international degree) or be enrolled in a PhD or equivalent international degree-granting program at the time of application.
PhD (or equivalent degree) in hand at time of appointment with specialization in at
least one of the following areas of German Studies: Film & Media, Modern Literature, Applied Language Studies, Translation, or Digital Humanities. Near-native fluency in English and German.
