Asst Prof, Writing Center Admin., Writing Across the Curriculum, and/or Writing in the Disciplines

We seek a tenure-track faculty member prepared to support University-Wide Writing Programming and participate actively in the Rhetoric and Professional Communication Program (undergraduate emphasis, MA, and PhD) at New Mexico State University.

The person hired for this job will serve as our University Writing Center Director. Ideal candidates will have research interests and teaching experience related to writing center theories and practices, writing across the curriculum, writing in the disciplines, writing pedagogies, assessment, and/or community writing. They will be prepared and willing to direct and participate on MA and PhD committees and to teach classes related to their areas of expertise (at all levels).

NMSU is a land-grant, Hispanic-Serving Institution in Southern New Mexico that serves multilingual, multicultural students from the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands region and beyond. Our MA in English and PhD in Rhetoric and Professional Communication support diverse, international student bodies. In support of our mission and dedication to our students, we seek a colleague able to articulate histories and traditions of disciplinary knowledge in inclusive and expansive ways. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research, teaching, and administrative philosophies are informed by translingualism and/or multilingualism.

Our programs engage the fields of composition, rhetoric, writing studies, technical and professional communication, literacy studies, and media studies. They are located in an English department that also includes specialists and programs in literary studies and gender and sexuality studies. We welcome interdisciplinary scholarship, synergy across subfields, creative teaching, and community engagement. With this hire in particular, we seek a colleague excited about the job of building collaborations within and beyond the Department to support a culture of writing across campus and in the community.

Additional scholarly interests within composition or secondary specialties we would be excited to welcome include, but are not limited to: decolonial, postcolonial, and transnational theories and methodologies; cultural rhetorics; border and migration studies; critical race studies; disability studies; anti-oppressive approaches to tutoring, writing pedagogy, and Writing Program Administration; public or scientific writing; critical media studies; and digital literacies.

This is a full-time, 9-month position. The base teaching load is 3-3 with releases available for graduate advising and administrative work. The Writing Center Director role typically comes with a 1/1 course reassignment.

The person hired in this job will begin an initial term (three years, renewable) as our WC Director in Fall 2023 and work with the Writing Program team to become a campus leader in supporting multiliteracies and writing across the curriculum at NMSU. We understand Writing Program Administration in relation to invention and labor politics; opportunities to rotate into alternate roles and participate in re-imagining positions exist in this context.
