CWRU Writing Program Lecturer

The English Department at Case Western Reserve University invites applications for multiple full-time lecturer positions in our new writing-intensive general education curriculum (see: https://case.edu/artsci/writing/academics.)  We seek enthusiastic teacher-scholars to join us in the implementation and continued development of our writing curriculum. Our first-year and advanced writing seminars will cover a range of topics and emphasize intellectual inquiry, critical thinking, and academic writing.

 

In addition to experienced teachers of college writing, we are especially interested in  candidates who have expertise in teaching one or more of the following populations: writers from diverse educational, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds; non-native speakers of English; and/or students with interests in scientific, technical, and community-engaged writing.

 

Lecturers’ responsibilities will include designing and leading first-year Academic Inquiry Seminars (offered both Fall and Spring semesters) and consulting with students in the Writing Resource Center. Responsibilities may also include designing and leading other writing-intensive seminars; creative writing, professional/technical or scientific communication courses; and/or other undergraduate courses. Opportunities for writing program administrative and assessment activities are available and count in the teaching load.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Experience in teaching college-level writing and a Ph.D. in English or Rhetoric/Writing Studies - or a PhD in another humanities, social science, or STEM field that is complemented by experience teaching and professional development activities related to college-level writing - is required.

 

For applicants interested in teaching non-native speakers of English, Ph.D. in TESOL, Second Language Acquisition, Second Language Writing, Applied Linguistics, English, or Composition and Rhetoric is required, as well as experience teaching writing to non-native speakers of English at the college level.

 

For applicants interested in teaching technical or professional communication, Ph.D. in Technical/Professional Writing - or an appropriate terminal degree accompanied by relevant professional experience - is required.

 

Responsibilities & Duties: Teaching load is the equivalent of six courses over the academic year (does not include summer), which may include a mix of classroom teaching, WRC consulting, and administrative activities. Initial appointment is for one academic year, beginning August 2023; this position is eligible for annual reappointment based on performance and programmatic need.
