Assistant or Associate Professor of Latinx Literature and Culture

The Department of English at Northwestern University invites applications to fill a full-time, tenure-line position in Latinx literature and culture at the rank of assistant or associate professor, for an anticipated fall 2023 start. Applicants at the assistant level must possess or supply evidence that all requirements for the PhD will be completed by August 1, 2023.

The Department seeks a scholar of Latinx literature and expressive culture. We welcome applicants whose research focuses on any single literary genre, period, geographical region, or linguistic tradition encompassed by Latinx cultural experience, as well as those whose work spans multiple genres, media, geographies, periods, or languages. Likewise, we welcome applicants whose work articulates transnational or hemispheric approaches to Latinx literature in relation to the literatures of the Americas (including Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, or the Pacific), or which focuses on comparative approaches to race and ethnicity (including, but not limited to, emphasis on Afro- or Indigenous-Latinx traditions).

In addition to maintaining an active research agenda, the successful applicant should demonstrate teaching excellence and an eagerness to mentor undergraduate majors and minors as well as Ph.D. students. The applicant should be prepared to teach introductory and advanced undergraduate courses in Latinx literature and to train graduate students in a range of critical methodologies, theoretical orientations, political histories, and intellectual debates that have structured the field over time.

Applications and supporting documents will be accepted only by online submission here. Materials should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching philosophy, including evidence of teaching a diverse student body, writing sample of 25-30 pages, and three letters of recommendation (submitted separately). For full consideration, applications should be submitted by October 19, 2022. Inquiries about the search may be sent to kelly.wisecup@northwestern.edu.
