The Department of Writing & Rhetoric Studies (WRS) at the University of Utah invites applications to fill multiple full-time, career-line (non-tenure-line, renewable five-year contract) Assistant Professor (Lecturer) positions. These teacher/scholar positions officially begin 1 January 2023, with initial teaching in Spring 2023. Salary is commensurate with experience.
About the Department
Each successful candidate will join a dynamic and rapidly growing department, one that has a long- standing first-year writing program, vibrant undergraduate minor, major, Master’s and PhD programs in Rhetoric and Composition, a new certificate in professional and technical writing, and the University Writing Center (http://writing.utah.edu/).
As a department, we embrace transdisciplinary approaches to writing and rhetoric studies. Each successful candidate will teach 3 courses during each Fall and Spring semester (on a nine-month, full-time contract). Teaching will be assigned in required lower-division writing courses. Successful applicants will also have the opportunity to teach one or more of the following upper-division courses: business and technical writing, scientific communication, WAC/WID development, among others.
Depending on qualifications, interest, and needs, career-line faculty can also offer courses in the department’s undergraduate major and minor in Writing & Rhetoric Studies, as well as graduate-level courses in the department’s graduate program in Rhetoric and Composition. Instructors also have priority choice for optional summer-term teaching, which pays at a per-section rate above the base salary.
Minimum qualifications include a PhD in rhetoric and composition or a closely related field and a record of teaching excellence in relevant courses. Applicants with expertise in one or more of the following are highly encouraged to apply: multilingual writing, multimodality, queer studies, disability studies, gender studies, computers and writing, digital rhetoric, legal rhetorics, cultural rhetorics, environmental rhetorics, online learning, writing program administration, and professional and technical writing. Applicants from traditionally underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.

Additional materials will be requested of candidates who advance in the search, including evidence of teaching effectiveness (possible examples include: student course feedback, peer observation letters, teaching awards, etc.), a one-page diversity statement, and three letters of recommendation.
