The English Department at the University of Missouri welcomes applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Creative Writing (Creative Nonfiction) to join our strong undergraduate and graduate programs, which include a PhD in English with a creative writing emphasis.
The candidate’s publication record should demonstrate a clear commitment to creative nonfiction as a primary genre with either a book of creative nonfiction, or clear progress toward a book (through prestigious magazine and journal publications, for example). We are especially interested in receiving applications from candidates whose creative work shows an engagement with traditionally underrepresented populations, perspectives, and communities. Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the university level is essential.
Our ideal hire will contribute to the English department’s prioritizing of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in its curricula, research, community engagement, and vision. To this end, applicants are asked to submit a one-page summary of their commitment to DEI, which highlights past activity and/or future ambitions toward DEI initiatives in any of the areas listed. Applicants should also have familiarity with current anti-racist creative writing pedagogy.
Candidates should be able to instruct, mentor, and advise undergraduate and graduate students in diverse approaches to creative nonfiction, and ideally also be comfortable contributing to the development of student creative writers concentrating in other genres. Likely courses of instruction include intermediate and upper-level creative nonfiction workshops; English 8500, an open-genre course for graduate creative writing students, focused on a specific subject, approach or methodology (e.g., Creative Writing and the Archive; Approaches to Adaptation); and undergraduate literature classes for majors and/or nonmajors based on the hire’s secondary expertise and/or interests.
Qualifications: An MFA or a PhD in English by the time of appointment. Candidates will be evaluated on their ability to mentor doctoral students through their course of study, helping to conceive of and coordinate intersections between their creative and scholarly work, including rigorous comprehensive examinations.
Please apply online at: https://hr.missouri.edu/job-openings (Job ID 43879). Use the online application and be prepared to upload, as a single document, a cover letter (2 page maximum); a CV, including a list of recommenders; and the above-mentioned summary of commitment to DEI practices (1 page maximum). Review of application will begin Nov. 15, 2022.
Questions should be emailed to Gabriel Fried, Director of Creative Writing and chair of the search committee, firstname.lastname@example.org. Contact Human Resource Services (email@example.com) for any questions about the application process.
