Assistant Professor of English

The Department of English at the University of Southern Maine is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor in English to begin our Fall 2023 Semester.  We seek an Assistant Professor with expertise in British Medieval literature and culture.  Candidates with strong additional interests are especially encouraged. These might include, but are by no means limited to, Old English, Nordic and/or Icelandic literatures and cultures, Arab and Islamic studies, and environmental humanities.

Responsibilities include undergraduate teaching of three classes per semester (all faculty share responsibility to teach College Writing or its equivalent), advising of students, maintaining an active program of research and other scholarly activity, and engaging in university and professional service. 

The targeted starting date for this position is Fall 2023 and will pay an annual salary of $58,500.  This is an on campus, in-person teaching position with opportunities to teach in online modalities.

Required Qualifications:              

  • Earned doctorate in English by the time of appointment (8/27/2023). 
  • Evidence of strong college teaching.
  • Demonstrated potential for ongoing publication.
