Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Southeast Asian Studies and Social Justice at UW-Madison

The University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks a tenure-track assistant professor for an appointment in Southeast Asian Studies and Social Justice in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures to begin in August 2023. Candidates for this position must have a specialization in humanities or qualitative social sciences with a regional focus on one or more countries in Southeast Asia, a topical focus on social justice, and fluency in at least one Southeast Asian language (apart from English).  Candidates for the position must show potential for developing outstanding and highly visible scholarly research focused on social justice in Southeast Asia; have a demonstrated commitment to teach Southeast Asia and Transasia-focused courses that are empirically and methodologically concerned with social justice; and have a demonstrated interest to communicate scholarship effectively to broad audiences inside and outside the academy. Candidates whose work crosses the humanities and qualitative social sciences are preferred.  Ph.D. in Southeast Asian Studies or a relevant social sciences or humanities field required prior to start of appointment.

 

This hire will join two other hires recently made across the College of Letters & Science through a Henry Luce Foundation-supported initiative intended to develop a strong social justice emphasis in Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Faculty and students at UW-Madison have a long history of research on social justice concerns in and related to Southeast Asia and around the world. The Luce-funded initiative builds on these existing strengths and aims to add greater diversity to the voices engaged in these discussions. It is intended to catalyze cutting-edge academic inquiry, strengthen scholarly infrastructure, and promote new networks and collaborations among academics and practitioners. Candidates should have an interest in developing scholarly and community collaborations with the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, as well as with colleagues in related centers, programs, and departments across campus and in Southeast Asia.

 

Duties of this position:

  • Maintain an active field-based research program in one or more countries in Southeast Asia
  • Pursue intra- and extramural funding to support their research;
  • Develop a national and international research profile by publishing their research in reputable peer-reviewed journals, edited volumes, and books;
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Asian Languages and Cultures; the typical teaching load is 2-2;
  • Advise undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students;
  • Proactively support the expansion of diversity among all components of the department and program, and ensure an inclusive, fair, and equitable environment that fosters engagement;
  • Actively participate in faculty governance and other service to the department, program, university, and profession.
