The Department of English, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in Literatures of the Global South at the Assistant level, to commence July 1, 2023. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in hand by the position start date of 1 July 2023, in English literature or a related field, and a demonstrated record of excellence or promise of excellence in research and in teaching. Applicants should have a clearly articulated program of research with a specialization in Caribbean, African, or South Asian literatures in English; complementary expertise in diasporic literatures will be considered an asset. Their research will be informed by postcolonial, World Literature, ecological, and/or diaspora theory. They may have research expertise in any historical period and genre, but would be expected to be knowledgeable about and able to teach twentieth- and twenty-first-century literature. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and, as appropriate, externally funded research at the highest level.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence or promise of research excellence of a recognized international calibre as demonstrated in: a cover letter detailing their research program; a record of publications (or forthcoming publications) with significant journals in the field; presentations at major conferences; awards and accolades; and strong recommendations from referees of high standing (to be requested of long-listed applicants).

The position will involve graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching. The successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence in teaching will be provided through strong letters of reference as well as the teaching dossier, which may include a statement of teaching philosophy, copies of teaching evaluations, and sample syllabi. Pedagogical innovation in such priority areas as experiential education and technology-enhanced learning would be an asset.
