The Department of Spanish and Portuguese in the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor with expertise in the area of bilingual language disorders, with a focus on Spanish. Although the position would be 100% within the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, it has been developed in collaboration with The Ohio State University’s Department of Speech and Hearing Science with the goal of creating a robust bilingual speech-language pathology (SLP) program. The successful candidate will strengthen the existing collaboration with Speech and Hearing Science and be integral in the development and implementation of the bilingual SLP program. Experience with and research on the relationships between typical and atypical bilingualism and language disorders, either developmental or acquired neurogenic, as well as best practices in bilingual speech-language pathology would be highly valued.
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese consists of 20 full-time tenure-track faculty, 26 associated faculty, and 3 professors of teaching. The Department has four main academic programs: Hispanic Linguistics, Latin American Literatures and Cultures, Iberian Studies and Studies of the Portuguese-speaking World, as well as an interdisciplinary specialization in Latino Literatures, Cultures & Languages. In addition to maintaining an active research program, candidates are expected to contribute to the Department’s teaching and service missions by teaching, advising, and mentoring students. Successful applicants will have opportunities to teach courses on bilingualism, bilingual language development and/or bilingual language disorders, as well as basic Hispanic linguistics courses at the graduate and undergraduate level. In addition, they will have the opportunity to take a central role in building the bilingual SLP curriculum. Applicants must have a PhD in Hispanic Linguistics, Linguistics, Speech and Hearing Science, Communicative Disorders, or a related field. Eligibility for clinical certification and/or eligibility for licensure in Ohio as a speech-language pathologist is preferred. Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and English are required. ABDs welcome to apply. The successful candidate will demonstrate a record of publications in peer-reviewed journals or an emerging publication record. We seek candidates who demonstrate multicultural competence, or the awareness, knowledge, and skills needed to work with others who are culturally different from self in meaningful, relevant, and productive ways. Willingness to work collaboratively with faculty and to mentor students from a wide range of cultures and academic backgrounds is preferred.
