Tenure-track faculty positions

The Civilization Studies Program (CVSP) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) is advertising two tenure track positions, one at the assistant professor rank and another open rank position. We are seeking candidates who have specializations in the following fields of study: continental philosophy, critical theory, political theory, psychoanalysis, comparative literature and literary studies, intellectual history, cultural studies, classics and medieval studies. We especially encourage candidates who have a rigorous training in a discipline while being engaged in interdisciplinary research projects, or projects that have implications beyond a strict disciplinary focus. We are seeking candidates who are able to relate their research to the critical humanities with the aim of employing humanistic inquiry for thinking through the conditions of the present to envision alternative futures. Candidates should have an expertise in at least two of the following areas of research interest: social inequalities, history and philosophy of science, Western and non-Western thought. Teaching experience in the liberal arts is considered highly relevant for this search. We are seeking dynamic teachers and thinkers who can engage with our new course rubrics (social inequalities, the normal and the pathological, human values, and science, nature and society) and who can work with us on the ongoing development of the liberal arts at AUB in relation to global and contemporary concerns.

The Civilization Studies Program has historically been the core liberal arts program at AUB. The mission of the Civilization Studies Program is to provide undergraduate courses in the humanities that support the American University of Beirut’s goals in general education and the advancement of knowledge. CVSP is committed to engaging students from all the faculties of the university in the study of human knowledge, using primary texts. The aim of CVSP is to enrich students’ own reflections and activities in the world and help them develop their thinking in a future oriented manner.
