The Department of English at Tulane University, in collaboration with the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in 20th and 21st century Latinx Literatures and Cultures. The candidate's area of expertise may include, but is not limited to, histories of colonialism, gender and racial formations, research on migration or translation, Afro-Latinx or Chicano Studies, and/or transnational approaches to Latinx studies. We welcome candidates who engage Latinx authors within a broad consideration of US literature and culture, and literatures of the Americas more broadly. The candidate will teach upper-level electives, graduate seminars, methods courses, and required core courses in both departments. Proficiency in Spanish is a requirement.

The successful candidate will be jointly appointed in the two departments, and be welcomed as a member of both communities, with 75% of teaching and service expectations based in English and 25% in Spanish and Portuguese. Tulane’s School of Liberal Arts has many jointly appointed tenure-line faculty, reflecting our strong commitment to interdisciplinarity and the multiple crossings of intellectual and pedagogical interests. The standard teaching load for tenure-line faculty is 2-2. The successful candidate will originate one of their courses from the curriculum of the Department of Spanish & Portuguese and three from the English Department, but we expect that many of these courses will be cross listed to attract students from both departments.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty in the Stone Center for Latin American Studies, the New Orleans Center for the Gulf South, the Programs of Africana Studies and Cuban and Caribbean Studies, and other entities within Tulane's School of Liberal Arts. New Orleans occupies a unique historical position as the gateway to the Americas, and the Latinx population in the city's metro area has more than doubled in the past two decades. This position represents a key part of Tulane's long-term strategic commitment to a global liberal arts.

Qualifications

Candidates should be fluent in English, proficient in Spanish, and should have their Ph.D. in hand by July 1, 2023. They should demonstrate a record of and/or potential for significant scholarly productivity in the field of Latinx Literary and/or Cultural Studies. They should have demonstrated experience in undergraduate teaching and demonstrated potential for excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching. A Ph.D. in English, Spanish, Latinx Studies, Latin American Studies, American Studies, Comparative Literature, or other allied discipline is preferred.

Application Instructions

Candidates should post a letter of application, curriculum vita, three letters of recommendation, and a writing sample in English of no more than twenty-five pages through Interfolio by November 15, 2022. Candidates may include an optional, additional writing sample of no more than twenty-five pages in Spanish.
