Position description

The Department of Literature within the School of Arts & Humanities at the University of California, San Diego (https://literature.ucsd.edu) is committed to excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and seeks candidates for an Assistant Professor in Feminist Film/Media - South Asia Focus.

The Department of Literature offers film and media studies courses in Asian cinemas that regularly attract large enrollments (200+). We therefore seek an experienced teacher familiar with the challenges of offering large-enrollment courses to non-major students. The candidates are expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses on cultural productions from South Asia—a linguistically and culturally diverse region whose film and media industries have historically enriched global cinema, and which has become a leading contributor to our contemporary “streaming” screen cultures. Candidates are also expected to offer interdisciplinary courses in UCSD's multidivisional programs (Critical Gender Studies, South Asian Studies, Film Studies, Third World Studies), strengthen and diversify UCSD's curricula, contribute to cross-divisional projects such as the South Asia Initiative, and address a departmental need for an expert in this area. In particular, South-Asia focused courses will contribute to the South Asian Studies Minor. We seek a colleague whose research is comparative in its approach and centers not only the study of popular regional film markets (e.g. “Bollywood,” “Lollywood”), but also marginalized film movements and transnational feminist responses to the historical and socio-political pressures of mainstream media industries.

Salary is based on the University of California salary scales.

Authorization to work in the US must be provided at the start of the appointment (Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1985).

Applicants are asked to submit applications using UCSD's online Recruit web page: https://apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/JPF03332.
