Assistant Professor in Black Literatures

The Department of English at Simon Fraser University invites applications for a full-time tenure track position at the rank of assistant professor in Black Literatures with a starting date of July 15th, 2023. We encourage applications from candidates with expertise in diasporic Black literatures, hemispheric Black literatures, African American literature, African and African Diasporic literatures, and/or Black Canadian literature. As well, we welcome complementary expertise in decolonial methods, transnational studies, critical race studies, studies of Empire and colonialism, Black feminisms and intersectionality, Black queer studies, Black critical/creative methods, and other relevant approaches. The successful candidate may have the option of joining the burgeoning interdisciplinary community of Black scholars at the university, with opportunities to work closely with campus organizations such as SFU’s Black Caucus and the Black and African Diaspora Institute. The English Department has 26 accomplished faculty, over 500 undergraduate majors and minors, and over 60 M.A. and Ph.D. students working in all areas of English studies, with notable strengths in contemporary Canadian, Indigenous, and diasporic literatures; environmental humanities; creative writing; print culture; and the Digital Humanities. We offer classes on three campuses in the metropolitan Vancouver area, as well as comprehensive distance education courses, joint majors, and opportunities for cooperative education. BC’s lower mainland, including the city of Vancouver, is globally renowned for its cosmopolitanism and livability. The region also possesses a rich and longstanding history of Black art, thought, and organizing.

The successful applicant is expected to significantly enhance the Department of English’s research strengths and help sustain the collegial atmosphere within the Department. The teaching load for this position is 2/2, and includes courses at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum and the graduate program. The successful candidate will have a PhD completed by the appointment start date or shortly thereafter.
