The Russian Program in the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (SLLC) at the University of Maryland, College Park invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Russian specializing in Russian language, linguistics, literature, or culture and Digital Humanities. We are seeking a colleague with an innovative research agenda and a strong commitment to undergraduate education, with PhD in hand by August, 2023. While the area of specialization is open, we especially encourage applicants specializing in the use of digital media to transform the educational landscape and program design both for the Russian field in particular, and the broader field of the study of languages and cultures in general.
The successful candidate must have superior Russian language skills and the ability and desire to teach all levels of Russian language and general education courses and will be expected to contribute to the department’s mission by implementing research-based learning initiatives, expanding and supporting community partnerships, especially in the K-12 system, and participating in cross-programmatic initiatives within SLLC, and in the College of Arts & Humanities, in particular the Maryland Institute of Technology in the Humanities (MITH). This tenure-line faculty member will work across traditional disciplinary boundaries, leaning on our existing interdisciplinary programs (such as the Maya Brin Residency Program), both to broaden the knowledge base of students enrolled in Russian department courses and to contribute to the vibrancy of Russian studies on campus in general. The standard teaching load is four courses per year.
We seek candidates whose research, teaching, and service have prepared them to contribute to diversity and inclusion. Applicants are asked to summarize their leadership efforts, and past or potential contributions to diversity in their Statement of Contributions to Diversity. Contributions might include leadership in teaching, mentoring, research or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment and/or increasing access or participation of individuals from historically underrepresented groups.
For best consideration, please submit a letter of interest, current curriculum vitae, three confidential letters of recommendation, and supplemental documents: two sample syllabi for undergraduate courses, Statement of Contributions to Diversity, and an article or chapter-length writing sample (published or unpublished) in English.
Note that letters of recommendation need to be received by the application deadline: the names of three recommenders will be provided by the candidate in the online application and the system will generate emails asking them to submit their letters via a link.
All application materials should be submitted only through the University of Maryland online employment application system at: https://ejobs.umd.edu. Please note that applications submitted in any other way will not be considered. For best consideration, applications should be uploaded by November 1, 2022.
